Your First Time: What to Expect & How to Prepare

So you’ve decided to explore alternative medicine for the first time. Maybe a friend told you about it. Maybe you’ve been reading the research. Maybe you’re just ready for something different. Whatever brought you here, welcome. We’re glad you’re approaching this with intention.

At ALT MEDS, we believe that how you begin matters. Your first experience with alternative medicine can set the tone for everything that follows. Done with care, it can be grounding, clarifying, or even life-changing. Done carelessly, it can be confusing or overwhelming. This guide is here to help you do it right.

Start With Your Why

Before anything else, get honest with yourself about why you’re here. Are you curious about stress relief? Looking for a new approach to anxiety or sleep? Seeking a moment of stillness in a loud life? There’s no wrong answer, but having a clear intention anchors you when things feel unfamiliar.

You don’t need a perfectly worded goal. Even something simple like ‘I want to feel calmer’ or ‘I want to be more present’ gives your mind something to return to.

Set & Setting: The Two Things That Matter Most

The concept of ‘set and setting’ comes from decades of ceremonial and therapeutic use of plant medicine. Set refers to your mindset, mood, expectations, and emotional state. Setting refers to your physical environment.

For your first time, aim for both to be as calm and comfortable as possible. That might mean a quiet afternoon at home, a familiar playlist, a candle, a blanket. It might mean telling someone you trust what you’re doing. It might mean clearing your schedule so you’re not rushing anywhere afterward.

Unfamiliar environments, stressful days, or social pressure are not ideal starting conditions. Give yourself the gift of space.

Dosage: Less Is Always More to Start

One of the most common mistakes first-timers make is taking too much, too fast. Alternative medicine products, whether edibles, tinctures, or capsules, vary in potency, and your sensitivity is unique to you.

Start low. Always. You can take more next time, but you can’t un-take what you’ve already consumed. Give whatever you’ve taken time to work before adding more. Most products take 45 to 90 minutes to reach full effect.

What You Might Experience

Every person is different, and so is every experience. Some people feel relaxed and sleepy. Some feel giggly and creative. Some feel introspective and quiet. Some feel nothing the first time, as their bodies calibrate.

Whatever you feel, try not to resist it. Breathe. Get comfortable. Trust that it will pass. Most difficult moments in first experiences come from fighting what’s happening rather than moving through it.

After: Give It Room

The experience doesn’t end when the effects do. The hours and days that follow can be just as rich. Some people journal. Some go for a walk. Some simply sleep and notice how they feel the next morning.

Pay attention to what comes up, even if it’s subtle. Sometimes the most meaningful shifts happen quietly, in the background.
